"Doing things Differently"

07-07-04

Woke up this morning about 7:00 (eastern time) to a nice brisk 58 degrees in Des Moines, Iowa.  There were about a dozen or so other rv's parked in the same Flying J as we were.  Most of the rv's were transporters, I think all but about 4 of them were transporting new rv's to the dealer.  Some of them were motor homes, others were 5th wheels and travel trailers.  I saw a couple of them that were using 1 ton pickups to pull the trailer, and they were sleeping in the back of the truck (back seat of a 4 door pickup).  We started driving a little after 8:00 in the morning (eastern time)  and drove I 80 until we got to a town in Nebraska named Kearney.  That is just a little more than 1/3 of the way through Nebraska.  We got off I 80 there and went North about 2 miles and got on Route 30 West.  We stayed on 30 West until we got to the Nebraska/Wyoming line before we got back on I 80.  It was a nice drive.  Most of it was 2 lane highway, and we went through a couple of towns that we slowed down for about 5 minutes for, but most were small little villages that slowed us for about 60 seconds.  Speed limit for most of Route 30 was either 60 or 65, so we made pretty good time.  In all today we traveled 674 miles.  Started in Des Moines, Iowa, and ended up just outside Cheyenne, Wyoming in another Flying J center.  Weather ranged on the east end of Nebraska, from 60 degrees, to 92 degrees on the west end.  The eastern portion of Nebraska was cool and it rained hard for a while, then became clear and hot mid way through.  So far the trip has been good, although I think we may have clogged the fuel filter on the motor home again, like it was before we left home.  It is starting to miss at times depending on engine speed and how much the throttle is applied.  Will look for a filter tomorrow morning.  At least I know what to look for and  where it is to replace it.  Well, I think I will upload this and go to bed.  I'm not sure what kind of night it will be - we are sitting in a 35 mph wind (or higher) with gusts higher than that, and the motor home is moving around somewhat while parked.  By the way, fuel mileage today was actually about 9.5.  Pleasant surprise.  Tomorrow is another day......
