"Doing things Differently"

8-8-04

Left Normal, Illinois this morning, or actually, noon would be closer to accurate.  We woke up in Chucks driveway, and as he had promised us coffee in the morning, I looked out the window, and he was in the yard with the dog.  Opening the window, I asked "what's the number for room service"?  In less than 2 minutes we had a hot cup of coffee in the motor home.  Thanks, Chuck and Dianne.  We sat in the "home away from home", for a while, with both Chuck and Dianne, talking.  Finally, I said, we must get on the road.  They told us we were welcome to stay, but I figured we needed to get a little mileage under our wheels today.  We headed east on I 74.  After driving a while, we came upon another interstate - I 57 - which runs north and south.  If we head south, it will take us in the direction of Memphis, Tennessee.  We had 2 miles to make up our minds.  Sherry grabbed the map and looked at it, saying that we could follow it down to I 64, then head east into northern Kentucky.   "Ever want to see Kentucky", I asked?  She said "yes".  So there you have it.  That is how we ended up in a Flying J just north of the town, Evansville, Indiana.  Actually, we are about 15 - 20 miles north of Evansville, and about 20-25 miles north of the Kentucky state line.  If we continue east along I 64, which is likely, it will take us through Louisville, Kentucky.  From there, we have no idea which route we will take, but we'll have to check the map tomorrow.  You know, we'll see what we discover along the way.  You know how it is - when there is no plan, you can usually get there.  Today while driving, we began seeing old cars driving I 74 and I 64.  After arriving at our Flying J destination today, I asked the clerk and she said there had been an automobile show in Louisville, Ky. These were old cars turned into hot rods, not an antique car show.  They were quite colorful though.  So, here we sit, watching tv and typing on the computer, both being run by a small inverter, which is powered by the house batteries in the coach.  Isn't technology wonderful??  Anyhow, we really don't know what the plan is for the rest of the week, yet.  Guess we'll have to see what develops.  If we do this right, we will end up with a trip, having traveled in over 20 states, and over 9,000 miles.  Not bad for a trip that only lasts about 5-6 weeks.  I have some pictures that I took of oncoming traffic, but I don't think I will get them posted tonight.  By the way, on the home page, there is a link titled - Observations on the road - don't miss it.  Probably, tomorrow, we may get back onto Eastern time.  Think I will upload this for this evening.  Later....
